Assalaamulaikum (Peace Be with You) brothers, sisters, family and friends.

As most of you will be aware, Vanuatu was severely impacted by the recent cyclone that rampaged through the Pacific.  Our prayers go out to those who have lost their homes and livelihood in this event.  Please remember our brothers and sisters in your own prayers in the coming weeks.  Not only can we support with our prayers, but there is a desperate and immediate financial need we can help with.

Some History

Vanuatu is a small South Pacific Island nation with around 82 islands. The capital, Port Vila is located on Efate Island. Br Hussein Nabanga was the first Muslim and brought Islam to the shores in 1978. The first Muslim community was established in Port Vila in the village of Mele. Mohammed “Sambo” Seddiq, a senior local Muslim provided part of his land and a small building that houses Vanuatu’s first mosque in Mele.  Tanna island also has a significant number of Muslim families.  There are an estimated 200+ local Muslims living in Vanuatu today. Islam has also spread to other outer islands such as Malekula.

How has the community been impacted?

The Islamic centre in Vanuatu is totally destroyed.   The entire country has been devastated by cyclone PAM and funds are required urgently to assist these desperate communities whose homes and crops have been destroyed.
